The Late Heavy Bombardment in the Inner Solar System: Is There Any Connection to Kuiper Belt Objects?

چکیده

Data from lunar samples (Apollo, Luna, and lunar meteorites) indicate that the Moon was subjected to an intense period of bombardment around 3.85 billion year ago (Ga). Here a short review of this topic is given. Different interpretations exist, which either take this as the tail end of an intense but declining accretion period, or which consider a spike in the accretion rate at that time. The latter is the so-called Late Heavy Bombardment. Considering the enormous amount of matter that is required to accrete in the inner solar system at that time, and problems with deriving this mass from the asteroid belt, it is suggested that the Kuiper Belt objects could be a source for this bombardment spike, possibly linked to the late migration of Neptune outwards in the solar system.

Delivery and Redistribution of Volatiles on Mars during the Basin-forming Epoch: an Overview

Introduction: Samples collected during the Apollo era suggest impact bombardment of the lunar surface was particularly intense early in solar system history [1,2]. There are hints that the lunar cataclysm was actually an event that resurfaced planets throughout the inner solar system [3,4]: meteoritic fragments from the asteroid belt indicate objects between 2 and 5 AU were shock-metamorphosed ...

The Dynamical Structure of the Kuiper Belt and Its Primordial Origin

Since its discovery in 1992, the Kuiper belt has slowly revealed a stunningly complex dynamical structure. This structure has been a gold mine for those of us interested in planet formation because it provides vital clues about this process. This chapter is a review of the current state of knowledge about these issues. It is divided in two parts. The first part (section 2) is devoted to the des...

Dynamical determination of the Kuiper Belt’s mass from motions of the inner planets of the Solar System

In this paper we dynamically determine the mass of the Kuiper Belt Objects by exploiting the latest observational determinations of the orbital motions of the inner planets of the Solar System. Our result, in units of terrestrial masses, is 0.033±0.115 by modelling the Classical Kuiper Belt Objects as an ecliptic ring of finite thickness. A two-rings model yields for the Resonant Kuiper Belt Ob...

From Kuiper Belt Object to Cometary Nucleus

We now realise that many small body populations are related through a common origin in the Kuiper Belt, notably the Centaurs, the Jupiter Family Comets and certain dead-comets. But does primitive material from the Kuiper Belt survive the journey to the inner solar system and can we learn anything about it by studying the comets? We discuss observational evidence and other considerations that re...

The Chemical Composition of an Extrasolar Kuiper-Belt-Object

The Kuiper Belt of our solar system is a source of short-period comets that may have delivered water and other volatiles to Earth and the other terrestrial planets. However, the distribution of water and other volatiles in extrasolar planetary systems is largely unknown. We report the discovery of an accretion of a Kuiper-Belt-Object analog onto the atmosphere of the white dwarf WD 1425+540. Th...
